Description & Qualifications
Job Description
Individuals will be working as Type III Wildland/Forest Fire Fighters, but may also be called upon for other emergency Mitigation, Preparedness or Response Services such as prescribed fire support, sandbagging in floods, landslides, atmospheric events, etc.
The work can be anywhere in BC or throughout Canada as required, but our main office is in Cranbrook.
We are preparing for the 2026 summer wildland firefighting season, and need individuals in place once the need arises.
All workers are on call, as needed and when needed only.
A 12 hour work day is seen as typical once deployed. Each deployment can last up to 14 days at a time. There may be multiple deployments throughout the summer dependent on the Wildfire season. The fire season often begins in June and runs through until September annually. The demand for firefighters is dependent upon how many fires occur in a given summer: the fewer fires that occur means less work, and when there are many fires happening, this then leads to a very busy summer of work.
Pay Rate:
Daily pay rates for new (no experience) firefighters is as follows:
Regular Pay - $25.00/hour: 1st 8 hours
Time & ½ - $37.50/hour: for next 4 hours
For experienced firefighters, pay rates increase from this rate (ranging from $25-$39/hour plus overtime), and the amount of increase will depend upon experience, certifications and position held on fire crew.
While wildland firefighting is our primary job function, there are other forestry related work projects often that we work on as well. Many of our firefighters end up being offered additional work if interested, that may take place during quiet fire seasons, or outside of the summer firefighting season.
Certifications & Experience:
No firefighting experience necessary.
Individuals must be physically fit and able to pass a moderate fitness test (3.22km walk with 25 lbs. back pack in less than 30 minutes).
Courses or Certifications required:
S-100 – Basic Wildland Fire Suppression certification;
S-185 – Fire Entrapment Avoidance and Safety certification;
ICS 100 – Incident Command System;
WHMIS - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System;
TDG – Transportation of Dangerous Goods
All of the S-100, S-100A, S-185, WHMIS, TDG and ICS training will be provided to those who do not already have the certification. Course dates are under review for the spring of 2026 and applicants who do not already have this training and certification will be contacted once dates are determined.
Please note, any individuals who possess a current Class 5 Driver’s license, Basic First Aid or Intermediate First Aid & Transportation Endorsement or Advanced First Aid certification would also be seen as an asset, but these are not required.
Experienced firefighters are also welcome to apply. For experienced firefighters, proof of above certifications are required, or training can be provided. In addition, the annual S-100A refresher training is required.
For experienced firefighters the following current certificates are not required, but would be considered a valuable asset to our team:
- Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor - Wildland Fire Safety Module
- Power Saw Operator (Chainsaw)
- Tree Faller (BC Forest Safety Council, BCWS or CAGC)
- Fire Crew Leader Training
- WSPP-115 Structure Protection
All applicants will need to complete all fitness testing and certifications prior to working for the summer wildland firefighting positions.
